"Guns. We need more guns." Astra Militarum v Nurgle Battle Report - Round 2

Having played the first battle (here) and been sent away with my tail in-between my legs as my assault army got out assaulted by a bunch of Plague zombies who are amazing in combat (enough for you yet Mike?!) revenge has always been on my Death Company Chaplain's mind. As he crawled off the battlefield a bloody mess he vowed to take down Typhus once and for all and amassed an Astra Militarum force with a squad of Death Company to lead Typhus and his zombie horde into a trap...

"Guns. We need more guns." Blood Angels v Nurgle the rematch - preview

Thrashed
About a month ago I received a proper thrashing from my friend Mike and his Nurgle traitors who proved far too durable for my Blood Angels assault force (see the comments on the battle here).

I made a couple of mistakes in the battle but ultimately the extra bonuses given by papa Nurgle for using a specific formation was too much for my assault force. Extra cover saves, feel no pain, zombie regeneration and, the one that most hurt, reducing my WS, S & T by 1 meant that my - not amazing I will admit - assault focused force just could not get the job done. During this battle I also said that the Nurgle army was not great in combat. Mike has never let me forget this as all of his army demolished me in combat!!! - Gah!

Revenge
However, crawling from the field, covered in blood the Death Company Chaplain vowed to exact revenge upon the foe and take the head of Typhus. In the last month he has been amassing a new force to crush the traitors once and for all.

Death Company Chaplain Progress - Update 4 - Highlighting

This was how I left my chaplain at the end of the last post (Here).
At this point I had completed all of the base colours and washes and highlighted the wings of the jump pack.

I was now at the part of the process I had been dreading - the highlights!!!

Death Company Chaplain Progress - Update 3

At the end of Stage 4 in my last post (Here) pretty much all of the base colours were on the model:

I always find the base painting bit the most boring as the model always looks rubbish at this stage. It needs the washes and the highlights to really make it all come together and so I always look forward to the next bit...

Stage 5
For this stage I got to work with a wash of Nuln Oil over all of the red, gold and metal parts. I meant to do the purple but forgot at the time! I also washed the scrolls with agrax earthshade. Now I get excited as I can see the details appear - particularly the muscles(?) coming out of the armour.
I thought at this stage however that the red was not deep enough and so I added another wash of Carroburg Crimson to all of the red areas. I love this wash as it properly deepens the red but doesn't shade in the recessed areas. At this stage I also washed the skull and the recesses on the gold armour with Ogryn Flesh (Reikland Fleshshade). This colours the bone and gold ever so slightly rather than being too dark. As you may notice I also bobbed a slight amount of Blood Red into the eye sockets to give them a slight red glow too! The last thing I did here was to highlight the red 'feathers' of the wings. I got my 2 favourite red paints out (mephiston red and red gore) and painted mephiston red first, then put another highlight of red gore on the edges to give it some depth. However it turns out that I got them the wrong way around - Mephiston red looked much darker on the wet palette although it ended up being lighter on the model!!! Still looks ok though so I think i'll leave it.
So there we have stage 5 and we are up to my most hated part of painting - the highlights. Fiddly and time-consuming however they look fantastic when done so onwards and upwards...

Let me know what you think so far,

James.

Death Company Chaplain Progress Update 2

The second stage of my painting ended like this in my first update post here:

At this point the chaplain is red and black so next up is adding some of the other base colours.

Stage 3

All metallic at this stage. I used shining gold (Gehenna's Gold) as the base layer for the metallic gold parts of the model. I HATE painting gold so much. It never spreads properly and I just generally don't like the look hence there is none on any of my models! However I thought I'd give it a go seeing as he's a great model and a character and all. I thinned it right down and painted lots of coats to build it up which tok a while I have to say.
Secondly I used boltgun metal (Leadbelcher) for the metallic silver parts such as the Inferno pistol, jump pack etc.

Stage 4
For the last of the base colours for now I painted the scrolls and skull. For the scrolls I used bleached bone (Ushabti bone). Again I had to thin this right down and paint various layers to get the black undercoat covered properly. Then I looked at the pics of Games Workshop's model and the stamp is purple? I did wonder about this as I really didn't think that purple would go with red and black but I had some random alien purple from army painter and thought I'd give it a go. As you can see it came out rather bright but it will get washed down and highlighted. If it doesn't work I can always paint over it.
Then I painted the skull. Quite simple really just lots of thin layers of skull white (white scar) until I got an even colour. I know I haven't got a pic - sorry I forgot!!

So the model is coming together slowly but surely and it is looking better with each stage. Let me know what you think as I keep going.....

All the best

James

Death Company Chaplain Progress Update 1

After I bought, read and reviewed the Blood Angels supplement 'Angel's Blade' (Angel's Blade review here) I couldn't help myself in getting the Death Company chaplain with jump pack.

I love the model, it's so detailed and has a great pose. Also after reading the story I was inspired to get another leader for my army and put together the Death Company strike force formation. After all the Death Company are, of course, my favourite blood angels unit. After spending a rather too much £20 (Come on GW £15 at most please!) I've set to work over the past couple of days and started painting him so here is my progress...

Stage 1
I sprued the model cleaning up the mound lines and left him in 5 pieces ready to paint. Then I base coated the model Abaddon black.

Stage 2
Here I picked out all of the red areas of the model and painted them Mechrite Red (Mephiston Red in new money). I love the way that on half of the armor there are muscles bursting out!
Next I painted the wings on the jump pack Red Gore (Wazdakka Red for non-dads). I wanted these slightly darker so went for a more purply red.  I also thinned this paint right down to a wash consistency so that the black still showed through. This will hopefully let me paint up to a brighter red on the tips of the wings giving them some depth.

The more I paint this model the more detail I see and the more it impresses me. let me know what you think of my work so far.
